Buick Roadmaster - 1956

Last winter, The Better Half and I drove through Williams, Arizona, along Interstate 40’s high country. While there, we spotted a 1956 Buick Roadmaster, axle-deep in snow. The Better Half took the picture of the snowbound Buick. Not long after we posted the image on our family website, a commenter sent along an image of the same car taken when it wasn’t quite so cold. I love those old four-holer Buicks . . .

Mouse over the Buick to thaw it out.

A PLAN FOR RETIREMENT

During my professional career, I have enjoyed working on state of the art electronics, computer systems, optical/imaging systems and software engineering. I have gained a lot of experience and exposure to some of the most sophisticated aerospace and military projects possible. While I have enjoyed my career and love working, I’m sure that I’m going to enjoy retirement more.

In the not too distant future, we’re going to pull the plug on full-time employment and start to spend the kids’ inheritance. We’ve got a list of places we want to see, and things we want to do.

We have a general plan to fix up the house and put it on the market. After we sell, we’re going to move either to The Better Half’s birth state, Arizona, or to one of the adjoining four-corner states. The exact destination remains to be decided, but this will do as a preliminary plan.

We can hardly wait.

This is Not A Nuclear Attack

The Better Half and I were out shopping this afternoon. We paused briefly near the Torrance (California) Airport, Zamperini Field, where she took this photo of a massive brush fire in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, near La Cañada, about forty miles north.

The convective force of the fire is elevating the smoke that combines with atmospheric moisture to form this smoky cumulus build-up that resembles a nuclear cloud. Clickable image.

Waltz of the Cuckoos

I must say that I had a lot of problems with “Dubya” when he was in the Oval Office. For example: Harriett Who? For the Supreme Court? And Shamnesty? The McCain-Kennedy Immigration Reform Act? He rankled the most ardent conservative nerves with those, for sure.

But the Bush Administration never let us down when it came to protecting Americans from a repeat of 9/11 or the USS Cole incident. They were not nice to terrorists and they did not give a shit what CAIR and the ACLU might think about it. Props to them for that.

It’s like comparing a vigilant watch to a right twice a day cuckoo clock á lá the Obamination . . .

Introducing “Miss Piggy”

The Better Half has had this firearm for some time, about two years. It’s a Para Ordinance Warthog” .45ACP compact pistol. Only recently did we have a conversation about giving it a nickname.

I call my flame-throwing S&W 686 .357 Magnum revolver “Jerry Lee” because of the great balls of fire it produces. “Fat Man” and “Little Boy” seemed appropriate for my Glock 30 and Glock 26 compact .45 and 9mm pistols, respectively, in tribute to the millions of Japanese and American lives saved by the A-bombs of the same names.

The Better Half already named her little rosewood-gripped S&W 442 .38 special revolver “Rosie the Riveter.” She didn’t especially want to name the Warthog until I suggested “Miss Piggy.” And then she was in 100%.

Ted is Dead

Kennedy was no friend of the Second Amendment. He was always a solid F-minus with the NRA. Forget all the platitudes and adoration from the far left politicos and media morons - consider some other, realistic points of view from those not as enamored of the late ultra-liberal:

“There is a lot one could say of Senator Kennedy — positive from supporters, negative from critics. They say one should not speak ill of the dead. True. But I am of the view that one should not lie about the dead either.” –political analyst Bill Bennett

“[Ted] Kennedy left the scene of a fatal accident for which he was at least partly responsible. Then he used his extraordinary power to get off, spending the rest of his career in pseudo-remorse, playing the most liberal of Senators. It was always an act to me, even when I agreed with him politically. This was not a life well lived.” –author and screenwriter Roger L. Simon

Hat tip Patriot Post for the quotes.

Oh yeah - and then there was the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty Act to legalize millions of criminal aliens . . .

Nine Trillion

Today’s Columbia Conservative Examiner posts about the Administration’s Economic meltdown. The projected seven trillion dollar deficit is now up to nine.

Remember the graphic that put a trillion dollars (in 100 dollar bills) in perspective?

Well, here’s the Obamination’s shiny, new deficit in the same context . . .

Greg Gutfeld on Arthur Frommer

One of my daily stops is to read the musings and rants of Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld. Gut’s humor and insight are - well - entertaining.

Today’s treatise was about one Arthur Frommer, in particular, but it was also about right to carry versus crime rates. I don’t know how many pro-gun guys read Gut, but today’s Daily Gut is worth the read:

MONDAY’S GREGALOGUE: FROMMER = TOOL

gut.jpgSo the king of the travel guide racket, Arthur Frommer, has come out against Arizona. Yes, he claims he’ll no longer visit the state because it permits “thugs” to openly carry guns. He revealed this on his blog, after witnessing a protester carrying a rifle outside a building where the President was speaking.

Frommer says he’ll consider whether “tourists should safeguard themselves” by avoiding the crime-ridden hell-hole that is the Grand Canyon. After I read about this, I decided to do a search to see if Frommer ever made similar pronouncements about other cities or states. I wondered if he had ever told people to avoid Washington DC, where, according to a US Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2004 report – that place topped the entire country in crime.

Zilch. Nor could I find any such commentary, regarding Detroit, Memphis or Miami - the only large cities in the US with more than 950 violent crimes per 100,000 people, according to FBI’s 2008 crime report. And what of President Obama’s very own Chicago, a city experiencing a dramatic uptick in shootings, muggings and other violent gang activity? Did Frommer warn travelers away from that bullet-ridden borough?

Nope. Fact is, Frommer went after Arizona, because it’s an easy target. It’s just a bunch a white rednecks with guns, even if one of the white rednecks is uh, black. And it feeds Frommer’s ego: voicing an opinion in sync with the liberal, like-minded media provides him, for a brief moment, an elevated sense of self.

But I sympathize. All he does all day is make travel guides.

Maybe he should get out more.

All the more reason to move to Arizona.
